NOTES

While the quality of city buses in Mexico may not be up to American standards in terms of appearance (they are quite safe and convenient, however), their motorcoaches often rival most airlines for comfort and convenience and are very viable, and economical, method of getting around to multiple destinations within Mexico if you are comfortable with your level of Spanish. Domestic airlines are present and growing, though too pricey for most Mexicans who still prefer to travel by motorcoach.

For local transportation, taxis are ubiquitous and easy to hale in just about every city and pueblo. Ride share services like Uber are also common. We do not recommend renting car, though it is possible, for no other reason than Mexican drivers tend to play it loose with traffic laws and police corruption is still present everywhere. It's not uncommon for Mexican cops to pull over drivers (Mexican and foreign) to demand a bribe in exchange for not following through on a trumped up traffic violation. If they think you are "rich" American, expect the bribe to be higher. Likewise, a fender bender in Mexico could result in the whole town coming out to extort you for money even if it's not your fault. Best to leave the driving to someone else.
